Walther P38 Serial Numbers Cyq
Reinhard - thanks for those great pictures! My CYQ P.38 is likely later production than yours - mine has a suffix letter code of 'h', and has no year date stamp on it. The finish isn't quite as smooth as yours, but not as rough as some of the very late manufacture pistols. A word of caution.
Or one of the many countries that used the P.38 post-war. Walther Manufacture Walther. Serial number location “P.38. Cyq second letter series None P.38. What I think makes my P38 interesting is that although the serial numbers on all the parts match, it has CVQ stamped in the slide and CYQ on the barrel. Walther was ac, mauser was byf,Because a coding system was ordered by the German Army Weapons office in 1939 to prevent anyone from knowing.
I used to fire this pistol lots until a few years ago. The extractor broke during firing, and I had a devil of a time finding an extractor, plunger and spring that would actually function and stay put while firing. You can find these parts, but finding parts that function and stay put is a BEAR. My best guess is that the fine tolerances in the extractor cut-out vary from manufacturers just enough to matter. After 5 different extractors, Lord knows how many plungers and springs, I finally have a set that works reliably. The pistol is semi-retired in favor of a much more modern Beretta 92FS that I can run hundreds of rounds thru without worry. But that Spreewerke P.38 is still one of my favorites!
(You should have seen the looks I got when I used it to range qualify for Conceal Carry a few years back. The other shooters all had modern Glocks, Sigs and Colts). The first extractor sheard off - likely due to age and stress cracks. I haven't miked the plunger, but the springs - even the Wolff springs I bought - were weaker than the original. I am 100% certain that my installation was correct with the first 4 or 5 extractors. Aunsoft Video Converter Serial.
The number 5 or 6 that is installed now works perfectly, and it is a straight-forward installation process. You'd have to work hard to install the spring, plunger and extractor incorrectly.
I assume that the parts were 'aftermarket' being from Gun Parts, Int'l. Going back to tolerances, the first 4 or 5 popped right out after 15 to 75 rounds. I have to admitt that even though I've had over 45 years of ammeture gunsmithing and a number of years in Aerospace technology, I ended up taking the pistol to a well respected local pistolsmith.
