Just bought a very nice Colt Police Positive Special serial # 475197. The serial numder as you can see has six digits.
I researched this number on the internet and found a site that matches serial number to year of production which is 1941. The serial number on mine which is on the crane and on the frame where the crane rest is 475197 with a lightly struct M underneath the number. The research site does show serial numbers with a M as part of the number but they are all 5 digit numbers made in the mid 1970's. Am I correct in saying mine is a 1941? Thanks for the help.

Feb 17, 2014 Colt has recently added a great feature, allowing you to look up your Colt firearm by entering the serial number. One can only hope SIG follows suit! To use these tables, compare your serial number(s) to the correct manufacturer. Type of firearm, the third set is the firearms chronological number. Note: All SP1 serial numbers start with SP, not SP1. If you see a 1 there, it does belong to the serial number. Early SP1s were marked 'Colt's Patent Firearms' Later SP1s were marked 'Colt's Firearms Division' Below are examples of early and late SP1 serial numbers and roll marks:.
I think it is some sort of an inspection mark. The Police Positive Special was made (First Issue series) 1907-1927; The Second Issue guns, made from1928-1946, has a last patent date of 1926 on the barrel instead of the 1907 of First Issue examples.
My First Issue example (S/N 275149) also has the M struck on the frame below the serial number. It was made in 1921.
Download Elyana Ortiz. I think your grips are not original but rather are after-market replacements. Oh - my serial number list gives 1941 as the date for yours. Last edited by Clyde; at 05:39 PM. The letters or numbers 'around' the serial number on Colt's are factory inspectors stamps. Colt started adding letters TO the serial number in the mid-1960's, and these are always PART of the stamp, not 'around' it.
On some pre-war Colt's 'some' letters do have other meanings. As example, a 'T' indicated the revolver was factory targeted. Your revolver may have been re-barreled some time in the past. The barrel appears to be one with the post-war ramped front sight which was introduced in the late 1940's. Pre-war front sights were the round 'half moon' type.

Oh - my serial number list gives 1941 as the date for yours.I'm trying to date my Colt Police Positive Special 32-20 WCF. The serial number is 2403XX. It also has a small 't' below the number. The Patent dates shown on the barrel are Aug 5 1884, June 5 1900, and July 4 1905. I attached a few pictures of it. Do you have any information on this?
